Design company wires Micras for sound

A North East design company is in sound shape after designing and integrating a new iPod system into 35% of all Nissan Micras currently produced at Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK (NMUK).

FS Design, based at the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC), have managed a project on behalf of Nissan International SA and NMUK which involved design, development and manufacture of bespoke docking stations and the supply of Apple's last two generations of iPod nano. The dock and iPod are supplied as a standard feature in almost all Nissan Micra 25th Anniversary editions sold throughout Europe and beyond.

Failing transport system stifles region's growth

Eighty per cent of businesses in the North East believe that the region's transport infrastructure hinders economic growth, according to a survey published this week.

More than 90% of members of the North East Chamber of Commerce said they had faced increased operating costs as a direct result of the UK's failing transport infrastructure, while 68% had actually lost business as a result.

A North East firm which has become a major automotive supplier in Europe, India and the USA, has taken another step towards evolving the design of motorised vehicles.

ComeSys Europe Ltd already designs, makes and distributes state-of-the-art systems which almost every vehicle must now implement in place of old-style accelerators.

North East driving team take European Britcar Championship title

Local businessman Ian Lawson, along with driving team mates Mike Wilds and Anthony Wilds, are flying the chequered flag for the North East as European Endurance Racing Champions, after a final race at Brands Hatch to decide the 2008 Britcar Championship.

The amateur driving team, consisting of 54-year-old Ian Lawson from Ponteland and 63-year-old ex-F1 driver Mike Wilds, took the title following a close-run final race on 15 November. Third driver Anthony Wilds and the three-strong support team in charge of maintenance, pit duties and team strategy - Peter Rea, Steve Murray and Gordon Jackson - celebrated the win as one of only a small number of amateur driving teams to ever claim the title.

Sunderland drives forward ‘great British adventure'

Experts at a North East university are working on plans for the world's fastest ever car, capable of reaching speeds of 1,000mph.

The University of Sunderland team is working on the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car (SSC) Project, a car powered by a Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine and hybrid rocket that will be capable of approximately 1,050 mph - twice the speed of a bullet fired from a handgun.

Company car use 'set to grow'

Businesses could soon return to providing employees with company cars due to fears of litigation and concerns over the image staff portray in their own vehicles, an HR firm has claimed.

Many firms have switched away from such schemes, preferring instead to offer "cash for cars", where they give employees an allowance to use their own vehicles for work purposes.
