Sunderland drives forward ‘great British adventure'

Experts at a North East university are working on plans for the world's fastest ever car, capable of reaching speeds of 1,000mph.

The University of Sunderland team is working on the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car (SSC) Project, a car powered by a Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine and hybrid rocket that will be capable of approximately 1,050 mph - twice the speed of a bullet fired from a handgun.

Company car use 'set to grow'

Businesses could soon return to providing employees with company cars due to fears of litigation and concerns over the image staff portray in their own vehicles, an HR firm has claimed.

Many firms have switched away from such schemes, preferring instead to offer "cash for cars", where they give employees an allowance to use their own vehicles for work purposes.

Economic downturn creates Nissan cutbacks

Nissan is to halt production of two models at its Sunderland plant in response to a decline in demand as a result of the current problems in the UK's economy.

Production of the Micra and Note models will end by November this year.

Call for 30-year transport plan

Experts are calling for a 30-year plan to overcome the "paralysis" blighting the North East's transport network and to avoid major economy-damaging problems, in a report issued this week by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Lack of investment and lengthy delays to planning decisions are all cited as causes for concern in the report by the ICE's North East region. The report also calls for a 30-year strategy to ensure that improvements are delivered in a timely fashion to provide wider benefits to the region.

Buses are getting better campaign launched

A new advertising campaign has been launched to promote the benefits of bus travel, as commuters look for cheaper alternative to the car during the credit crunch.

Nexus and operators in Tyne and Wear are working together to promote bus travel - and dispel many of the myths that might put people off bus travel.

Airline moves to help North East travellers

The flyglobespan airline has said that it will step in to assist holiday firm Thomas Cook this winter by providing flights for passengers scheduled to fly with recent airline casualty, Futura Airways.

Thousands of Thomas Cook's passengers were affected when the Spanish airline went into administration last week. However flyglobespan, which has reported 'record' load factors over the summer, said itwould offer some support.
