1,350,000,000 reasons for NE public sector to look local

A regional employers' group has today called on local councils to play a greater role in the economic recovery of the North East.

The North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), which has more than 4,500 members, has written to chief executives and leaders of every local authority in the region urging them to more actively support businesses in the area.

North East will 'weather the recession'

The renaissance of northern cities has positioned them relatively well to weather the economic storm, while London could be set to bear the brunt of the recession, according to a new report published today.

The Local Government Association report, called 'From Recession to recovery: the local dimension', projects how each area of the country could be affected differently by the recent economic changes if no action is taken - and the North East is apparently very well placed to endure the downturn.

Training to Impact on the region's businesses

Businesses in the North East are being urged to take advantage of Â£350 million being earmarked by Government to boost training and aid productivity.

10 companies in the region, including Camerons Brewery in Hartlepool and HFW Plastics in Gateshead, are currently benefiting from over Â£500,000 worth of training being delivered by Business Impact, a training consultancy based on the Team Valley Trading Estate.

Award win positions young travel firm for take off

A Newcastle travel company has been recognised with a national award at an industry ceremony which took place in London last week.

Only seven months since the company started trading, Monstertravel.co.uk picked up a Marque of Excellence for Leading Small Call Centre at the Thomas Cook Group Awards ceremony. The honour reflects the young company's commitment to personalised customer service through provision of over fifty dedicated call centre staff at its headquarters in Gosforth.

Job cuts hit young and old

Workers aged under 24 and over 50 are taking the brunt of the wave of redundancies that is currently sweeping the UK, the TUC has warned.

The organisation's analysis found there had been a 12.8% quarterly increase in those aged under 24 who had been unemployed for up to six months and a 29.7% rise in the number of over-50s who have been without a job for 6-12 months.

Credit crunch 'helps communities'

The economic downturn could lead to an upturn in the fortunes of Third Sector organisations, it was claimed recently. In October, more than 60 voluntary and not-for-profit organisations came together with local authorities and One NorthEast to discuss physical regeneration opportunities available in some of the region's most deprived areas.

At two recent mini-conferences in North Tyneside (hosted by Pentagon Partnership) and Middlesbrough (hosted by the Tees Valley VCS Forum) delegates heard that the demand for Third Sector services is likely to increase as jobs are lost and vulnerable people become needier.
