Durham graduate wins prize for a powerful idea

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East has recognised a Durham graduate's work on renewable energy generation by awarding a prize for his efforts.

Earlier this year, Will Coombs graduated with a First Class MEng Honours degree in General Engineering at Durham University. As part of his work in the final year of the programme, Will undertook a project which focused on micro-hydro electricity generation in the Lake District. His course leaders were so impressed with the standard of his work that he was nominated for the annual ICE North East award - which he won.

NaREC invited to China Wind Power Summit

The North East's renewable energy sector will be making its presence felt at an event in China this month.

Stephen Wilson, director of wind and marine at the New and Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) will be going to Shanghai as a guest of the China Wind Power Summit.

Cycle ride on track to illuminate benefits of wood heat

NEWHeat - an initiative funded by One NorthEast to encourage businesses across the region to switch their heat energy supply to wood heat - has teamed up with the Northumberland Lights festival to offer cyclists the chance to experience a night time cycle ride at Kielder Water & Forest Park on Wednesday 12 November.

The Wood Rush cycle ride takes cyclists from Kielder Castle to Leaplish Waterside Park and back. The event has been designed to promote NEWHeat's mission to change energy usage and reduce carbon emissions - a philosophy shared by Northumberland Lights organisers, who use bio-diesel generators to fuel the festival programme.

Summit fuels energy debate for a fairer future

Fuel providers, energy experts and campaigners were brought together for a special Fair Fuel Summit in Darlington this week.

Fabrick Housing Group organised the summit at Darlington FC with the aim of encouraging energy companies to develop a strategy to support the increased number of people who will find themselves struggling to pay their energy bills this year.

North East to lead renewables boom

The North East's development agency went to London this week to shout about the region's renewable energy plans.

One NorthEast announced plans to offer Â£4.5m of support for the development of the North East offshore wind industry in a presentation to industry leaders and politicians at the British Wind Energy Association's annual conference.

Teesside energy centre gets approval

Planning councillors this week granted approval for a second plant generating electricity from household waste on Teesside, hopefully creating hundreds of jobs in the process.

Sita submitted an application to Stockton Borough Council at the beginning of August for the factory in Haverton Hill, Billingham.
